DIRECT HEADS

2024-Present

This body of work presents a series of ultra large format portraits that explore the physical and perceptual relationship between viewer and subject. Produced using large-scale photographic processes, each image is constructed through a slow and deliberate engagement with light, material, and time. The resulting prints are not simply representations of individuals, but objects in their own right—surfaces that hold a direct trace of the encounter between sitter, camera, and photographic medium.

By working at an unusually large scale, these portraits invite an intimate yet confronting experience. The viewer is drawn into the fine detail of skin, expression, and presence, encountering the subject at a level that resists casual viewing. This emphasis on scale and materiality disrupts the quick consumption typical of digital imagery, encouraging a more sustained and embodied form of looking.

At its core, the project investigates what it means to feel close to an image. Through analogue processes and carefully considered presentation, Ultra Large Headsseeks to foreground the labour, physicality, and relational depth embedded within photographic practice, offering a space where the act of viewing becomes a moment of genuine proximity.
