SHIPYARD

Cammell Laird’s was founded in 1882, thousands of ships have been repaired and built there, millions of people have been employed by Cammell Lairds and it has been an economical and trustworthy friend to the people of the Wirral Peninsula, providing jobs and security for over 120 years. During Cammell Lairds latter years, its business has been supplemented by the Ministry of Defence, creating an atmosphere of secrecy and high security.

Quayle started documenting Cammell Lairds shipyard in 2012, and despite the strict rules in place prohibiting the public from entering the shipyard, he has taken every opportunity to participate in open days and guided tours of the shipyard. Quayle’s dedication to constructing the Shipyard monograph is fuelled by the hope he can one day construct a full visual narrative that explores the various facets of a much-loved shipyard.

The large-scale shipyard, it’s towering sheds, and the colossal structures are full of intricate details, and it is Quayle’s aim to photograph as much of it as possible, for as long as it takes.
